Sonny was first introduced to HRC when he was supporting someone with their work, but what started as a kind-gesture for a peer led him to pursue a HND in Fine Art at the college, a path he hadn’t planned but now embraces. In his words, Sonny explains how “I came here as a model, but after meeting teachers Joel and Helly, they encouraged me to explore a photography degree. I showed them my art, and they set up an interview for me.”
We spoke to Sonny about the inspiration behind his work exhibited, alongside the work of his course peers, at the Courtyard Arts Centre in Hertford, Hertfordshire. His artwork often explores apocalyptic themes, particularly those caused by humankind. Inspired by fungal infections and The Last of Us, a video game and TV series, he also credits The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard as a key influence for his work. “I couldn’t draw growing up, but comic art helped me find my style. Meeting Charlie Adlard and showing him my work was a huge motivator.”

Having his work displayed in a gallery is a special moment for him, and students alike, and although there it can be challenging creating work to be exhibited outside of the college, giving our students this opportunity helps them build the vital skills needed for their futures in the art industry. “It was tough but rewarding. The feedback from my family and teachers meant a lot to me.”
After completing his HND, he plans to pursue a Fine Art degree and hopes to either become a tattoo artist or work in the art industry in some capacity, using his positive experience here at HRC as the foundations for his future. “I’ve always wanted to be part of the art world—whether that’s creating, curating, or working in a museum – here at HRC, the supportive environment helped me rediscover my love for art, and I’m now attending five days a week, fully committed to my creative growth.”
