This vibrant course is equivalent to the first two years of a university degree, offering students a broad range of artistic skills and techniques. From printmaking, life drawing, textiles, and jewellery design to mixed-media exploration, photography, painting, and 3D design, students gain hands-on experience across multiple disciplines. They will develop independence, collaborate on projects, and curate exhibitions in our David Gentleman Gallery and other venues. Students will also organize artist workshops, learn branding and marketing strategies, and prepare for employment in the creative industries.

The HND Fine Art provides a fresh approach to art and design, emphasizing professional opportunities within the creative industries. This multi-disciplinary program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in one of the world’s most dynamic economic sectors. Balancing technical expertise with broad employability skills, the course offers 2D and 3D workshops in state-of-the-art studios, complemented by individual and group tutorials to foster self-directed practice. Students will engage with practitioners, participate in live briefs and visits, and exhibit their work in our professional contemporary art gallery, preparing them for a successful career in the arts.

One of the key advantages of our course is the smaller class sizes compared to universities, allowing for a more personalised and focused learning experience. We emphasize strong 1-to-1 teaching, ensuring that you receive the individual attention and support needed to excel in your studies and projects. Your work will be continually assessed throughout the course. Through 1:1 tutorials you will be given feedback and guidance throughout the different stages of the projects. The final assessment will depend upon the module being studied. Typical assessment methods include a combination of practical work submissions, written assignments, digital portfolios, and PowerPoint presentations.

ยฃ6000 per annum is the fee for HNDs at HRC in 2026/27. Full and part- time students are normally eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. See https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance

There may be opportunities for trips and visits organised, these will be at an additional charge for the students.

Before making a decision on any changes to your course, mode of study, dormancy or withdrawal, when funded by Student Finance England (SFE) we advise you contact HEAdmissions@hrc.ac.uk to discuss potential funding implications.

Changes to your course can potentially cause overpayments of the maintenance loan and cause ineligibility for future tuition fee loan funding from SFE.

As part of the program, you will have the opportunity to participate in inspirational study visits both within the United Kingdom and internationally. Our close proximity to London one of the world’s major art capitals enables frequent visits to renowned galleries and exhibitions. Students will be provided with sufficient notice to budget for these enriching experiences.
On successful completion of the course learners can top-up the HND to a full BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art, Fine Art Painting, Fine Art Sculpture, Illustration; Contemporary Applied Design; Textile Design or Photography at any university or enter full time employment.
