Start dates for this apprenticeship are available throughout the academic year, typically on a monthly basis. Following an application, the apprenticeship team will discuss the next available start date with you.
Bricklayers are found in both the new build and refurbishment sectors of the construction industry. Projects vary in size, scale, and duration, ranging from the creation of specialist features such as arches and chimneys for a domestic customer to the repair of a listed building to a large-scale commercial project utilising multiple facework types, techniques and materials. Employers of craft bricklayers vary in size from small companies to large commercial contractors. Craft bricklayers are masters in their field and often provide technical leadership and supervise the work of others. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the masonry element of the construction programme is delivered to specification, time and in a safe and sustainable manner – typically working outdoors on construction sites, in most weathers and at height.
Every day you’ll interact with your immediate team and the site management team, which could include a senior or craft bricklayer providing advice and guidance. You will often liaise with other construction trades such as site carpenters and roofers who could work for their own organisation or another contractor. Site managers again could work for their own company or the main contractor. In the case of smaller projects such as house extensions, liaison with the client, neighbours and officials such as building control surveyors would be expected.
You’ll be responsible for creating a high-quality product which meets standards, specifications and design plans. You’ll be expected to do this with due regard to all safety aspects involved with working on a construction site, ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others at all times. With sustainable construction at the forefront of all projects, it is expected you would give consideration to the environment and sustainability of materials, waste awareness and recycling.
As a HRC student, you’ll also receive excellent support from our tutors, pastoral care, guidance from assessors, access facilities and benefit from our strong employer links.
What will I learn?
You’ll learn how to set out and lay bricks, brick specials, blocks and other materials to construct and repair complex walls and features such as chimneys, battered, angled, radial and decorative masonry work.
You’ll plan and organise the work site, both for yourself and others, and verify the quality of the work of others within your team.
You’ll become a technical expert, providing direction and advice to others and advise on work approach and problem solving.
Entry criteria
Prospective apprentices would typically have already achieved a GCSE (or Level 1 equivalent) at grade 1/E in English and Maths.
How will I be studying?
You’ll typically study through a blend of workshops and face-to-face sessions.
On campus, you’ll benefit from regular classes with an experienced college tutor.
How will I be assessed?
You’ll have a 3-month apprenticeship assessment period.
This will include a multiple-choice test, a practial assessment with questions, and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
How many days per week will I be in college?
You will have weekly face-to-face sessions in college with an experienced tutor.
What can I do after this course?
Following this apprenticeship, you could progress on to advanced trade, supervisory, or independent roles, including becoming a senior/craft bricklyer, a site supervisor, or starting your own business.
Course fees
This course is free to apprentices, as the cost is paid by your employer. Large companies can fund the course using their apprenticeship growth and skills levy. SMEs can access government funding to subsidise the cost by 95%, or 100% depending on the age of the apprentice.
