In December 2023, we were visited by colleagues from Tanzania as part of the British Council’s Mentoring Project (read article).
Six months later, we sent two HRC representatives out to Tanzania to visit several Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) colleges as part of the project.
Richard Roberts (Director of Apprenticeships and Commercial Development) and Sabrina Ahmed-Qureshi (Director of Quality Learning Innovation) represented HRC and visited the Mikumi, Morogoro, Kihonda, and Dar es Salaam colleges, focusing on their educational offerings and infrastructure.
The VETA colleges offer a range of vocational training courses, with specific focus areas varying by location:
- Mikumi College specializes in Hospitality & Tourism, Electrical & Engineering, and Construction trades.
- Morogoro College provides vocational teacher training and vocational courses in Construction, Motor Vehicle, and Engineering.
- Kihonda College is a large vocational institution that includes mechanics, machinery, electrical trades, refrigeration, tailoring, and serves as a national centre for transportation.
- Dar es Salaam College offers programs in Engineering, Construction trades, Motor Vehicle, Printing, Transportation, and Tailoring.
Despite the diversity of programmes, the majority of courses offered are at Levels 1-3, and about half of the student’s board at these colleges, with variance depending on the location.
The visit was a fantastic opportunity to observe the positive impact of the mentoring project, as well as supporting staff’s professional development. We look forward to continuing our work with colleagues in Tanzania and the British Council.
