Take the next step in your professional development and become a fully qualified assessor across both workplace and vocational training settings. This 15-week, part-time NCFE Level 3 Certificate is designed for practitioners who assess occupational competence in the workplace and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in classrooms, workshops, simulated or training environments.

Course delivery: This is a 15-week, part-time course with two cohorts available: Cohort 1 starts in September 2026 and Cohort 2 starts in January 2027 at Broxbourne Campus.

Unit 01 โ€“ Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment.
This unit develops your knowledge of the principles and practices that underpin effective, fair and inclusive assessment in a learning and development context.

Unit 02 โ€“ Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment.
This unit develops your competence in assessing learners’ occupational competence within their real work environment using appropriate workplace assessment methods.

Unit 03 โ€“ Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding.
This unit develops your competence in assessing learners’ vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in settings such as classrooms, workshops, simulated environments or training organisations.

Aligned to NCFE requirements, this certificate supports you to plan, carry out and review assessment activities across both workplace and vocationally related settings. You will learn how to use a broad range of assessment methods, including observation of performance, examining work products, oral and written questioning, professional discussion, witness testimony, learner statements, assignments, projects, case studies, skills tests and recognition of prior learning.

On successful completion, you will be fully qualified to assess learners within your own vocational area and subject specialism, either within the organisation in which you work or as an independent assessor in industry, training or apprenticeship settings.

Throughout the course, you will develop the knowledge, confidence and professional assessment practice needed to:

  • Plan assessment activities that meet learner, centre, workplace and qualification requirements
  • Assess occupational competence in real work environments
  • Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in classrooms, workshops, simulated or training environments
  • Use a broad range of assessment methods, including observation, questioning, discussion, work products, witness testimony, assignments, projects, case studies and skills tests
  • Make accurate, fair and consistent assessment decisions using valid and reliable evidence
  • Provide constructive feedback that supports learner progress and achievement
  • Build a professional portfolio of evidence in line with NCFE assessment and quality assurance requirements
Assessment is completed through an internally assessed and externally quality assured portfolio of evidence. You will gather evidence from both workplace assessment practice and vocationally related assessment practice to demonstrate your ability to assess occupational competence, skills, knowledge and understanding using appropriate assessment methods.

  • All applicants must have access to two learners and suitable opportunities to assess both occupational competence in the workplace and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in a classroom, workshop, simulated or training environment.

Applicants should be in, or have access to, a suitable workplace and vocational training environment where they can collect valid assessment evidence for all mandatory units.

The course fee is ยฃ850.00 for the academic year 2026โ€“2027.

  • Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
  • Further Education teacher training or education and training qualifications
  • Assessor, trainer or apprenticeship assessment roles within your vocational specialism
