This 10 week course introduces students to the skills required to progress onto making, customising or altering garments.

Each week will focus on a different skill to include:
Sewing machine basics
Seams
Hems
Zips
Pockets
Buttons & buttonholes
Darts, tucks & pleats
Overlocking

Working in our Fashion studio, with access to industrial and domestic machines, students will produce a selection of samples for each of the skills covered.

Following completion of this course, our Dressmaking for Beginners short course is ideal for anyone wishing to learn how to make garments from commercial patterns, alternatively our Introduction to Pattern Cutting short course introduces students to the basics of drafting patterns from scratch.

There are no formal entry requirements, this course is suitable for absolute beginners or those wanting to refresh their skills.
Please bring:
  • a basic sewing kit to include fabric scissors, tape measure, pins, hand sewing needles, thread snippers/embroidery scissors and a stitch/seam ripper.
  • a note/sketch book and pen/pencils. 
  • an A4 Lever Arch Folder and plastic wallets to build a technical folder, with step-by-step instructions alongisde the samples.
You will be made aware of any other requirements as the course progresses.
ยฃ125 for the 10 week block.

This course is scheduled on a Thursday evening, 19:00 – 21:00, at our Ware Campus.

This course is suitable for students aged 16+.

Once your booking/payment has been processed on our system, you will receive an email confirming your booking (please allow 3-5 working days for this).

The Department will contact you via email with start-up instructions approximately 1 week before the start of the course.

Please monitor your junk mail for emails from us as we are aware some of our system generated emails can end up there.

All our Art & Design short courses and workshops run subject to reaching minimum numbers.  In the event we are unable to run the course/workshop you are booked on to, you will be offered a space on an alternative course or a full refund of the course fee.

We endeavour to remove our courses from the website once they are full, in the unlikely event you are able pay for a course/workshop that is full, you will be offered a space on an alternative course or a full refund of the course fee.
