This course allows students to develop their technical skills and foster their creative and independent practice. Students will learn how to use the SLR, DSLR, photographic studio and darkroom. Students will also study lighting ratios and learn about various lighting equipment, health and safety in the studio, building and maintaining client relationships and shooting and editing moving image. The course will also allow students to explore the world of photography further, through researching photography history and materials/processes application, as well as exploring ways of presenting design ideas using digital media.

The HND in Photography offers you the unique opportunity to develop your own signature style and visual language in the creation of a professional photography portfolio. This course will be delivered in a brand new professional photographic suite in a new state of the art Creative Enterprise Campus in Ware.

This two year programme explores analytical and critical approaches to photographic imagery, together with the study of the critical context of photography. At the end of the course you will be expected to create a professional portfolio of work to assist you in pursuing a successful career in the industry.

  • Our students create amazing work – previous students have worked on editorial briefs, taken landscape photographs on a college trip to Iceland and collaborated with fashion students on a fashion photography brief.
  • You will build your own portfolio of work and website and learn how to market yourself as a photographer.
  • You will work with employers on commercial photographic projects gaining valuable work experience.

Our goal is to provide you with the focused knowledge and understanding of photography needed to qualify for entry-level, industry positions as Commercial or Fine Art Photographers, Picture Editors, Picture Researchers, Digital Retouchers, Digital Operators, Photographic Assistants, Professional Photographic Fine Art Printers.

In addition to technical proficiency and creative development, your education will help you develop critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills that contribute to life learning, providing you with tools to help sustain a long an productive professional career.

You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods such as; development of photographic techniques, practice in photographic disciplines, developing exhibition projects, responding to commissions and live briefs, written presentations, portfolios and log books. Grades are awarded for evidence of professionalism, research, technical skills, analysis and communication skills.
You are expected to provide your own photography kit – DSLR Camera.

Preparation – You are required to attend an interview with a portfolio including examples of your photography.

48 UCAS points from an appropriate Level 3 qualification (such as a UAL Diploma, BTEC Extended Diploma, or 2 A Levels), plus GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or equivalent.
 
We also welcome applications from individuals with relevant industry experience, alternative qualifications, or self-developed subject knowledge. Applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Applications to our full-time undergraduate courses can be made through UCAS. If you haven’t started a UCAS application yet, and only want to apply to Hertford Regional College, you can apply directly to us using our direct application form and we will process a UCAS application on your behalf.

£6000 per annum is the fee for HNDs at HRC in 2026/27. Full and part- time students are normally eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. See https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance

There may be opportunities for trips and visits organised, these will be at an additional charge for the students.

Before making a decision on any changes to your course, mode of study, dormancy or withdrawal, when funded by Student Finance England (SFE) we advise you contact HEAdmissions@hrc.ac.uk to discuss potential funding implications.

Changes to your course can potentially cause overpayments of the maintenance loan and cause ineligibility for future tuition fee loan funding from SFE.

You will have the opportunity to develop your critical appreciation of professional art and design, there may be opportunities to attend exhibitions in the United Kingdom or further afield to places such as Barcelona, Iceland and Berlin. These visits are not mandatory and the costs will be additional to the course fee. Students will be given sufficient notice to budget for these events.
Entry into the photography world is always competitive and there are particular employment routes which may be suitable for graduates of this course. It may be possible to ‘top-up’ to an honours degree at another Higher Education Institution.
