The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children, from birth to seven years of age, with applied knowledge in the early years, 0-5years.  The qualification content meets the Department for Education’s (DfE) Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce.

The qualification is ideal for learners looking to work with children between birth and five years, and gain knowledge of working with children up to seven years.  Learners do not need to have previous experience or qualifications in working with children to undertake this qualification.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner OR progress onto the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications, relating to early years and childcare.  Further details on Early Years qualifications and progression can be found on the NCFE website.
To gain this qualification, learners must achieve a total of 37 credits from all 14 mandatory units.  Learners will attend face to face teaching sessions, providing underpinning knowledge for units including:
  • Roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practioner
  • Health and safety of babies and young children in the early years
  • Equality, diversity and inclusive practice in Early Years settings
  • Safeguarding, protection and welfare of babies and young children in Early Years settings
  • Understand how to support children’s development
  • Support care routines for babies and young children
  • Support the plannning and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes
  • Promote play in an Early Years setting
  • Support well-being of babies and young children for healthy lifestyles
  • Support babies and young children to be physically active
  • Support the needs of babies and young children with Special Educational Needs and disability
  • Promote positive behaviour in Early Years settings
Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement to show competence in both in knowledge and skills.  We require learners to complete a minimum of 250 placement hours, whilst undertaking this qualification.  Placement opportunity must allow for skills application with babies and young children, sufficient to meet the assessment critieria for the qualification.
You will be assigned your own personal Assessor who will support you with gathering evidence to support the assessment of your work.
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods:
  • Knowledge based outcomes can be assessed using assessment tasks set out on a weekly basis
  • Skills based outcomes must be achieved with reference to a ‘real’ work environment and must include direct observation within the workplace
Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on a practical placement as an important part of the assessment process that involves evaluating skills in real working situations. 250 placement hours are required as a minimum in settings for children aged 0-5yrs.Learners must have a paid or voluntary role in an early years setting for at least 10 hours a week.Learners will need to  be able to use spoken and written English accurately to a level equivalent  to, or above, an ESOL Level 1.The part-time childcare team will be happy to respond to any enquiries, and can be contacted on 01992 411331 or email infochildcarept@hrc.ac.uk
