Motor Vehicle apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to develop skilled technicians and strengthen your workforce.
By combining practical workshop experience with industry-recognised training, apprentices gain the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide range of vehicles. They develop expertise in areas such as vehicle systems, fault finding, servicing, and customer service, while working towards a recognised qualification. Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3)

Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technicians service and repair light vehicles such as cars and vans, working in either dealerships focussing on a particular manufacturer, or in an independent garage which deals with many different vehicle makes and models.
Their day-to-day work will range from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. As more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques are introduced in the Automotive industry, their tasks will change and their skillset will evolve.
Start dates are available throughout the year.
Skills Gained
Apprentices will learn a range of fundamental and core vehicle systems and technology, diagnostic techniques and fault finding skills, practical mechanical skills, workshop safety and environmental standards. They’ll also learn how to effectively deliver customer service and gain commercial awareness.
Training Structure & Time Commitments
Learners will typically study through a blend of workshops and face-to-face sessions.
On campus, they’ll benefit from regular classes with an experienced college tutor.
Candidate Suitability
Prospective apprentices would typically have already achieved a GCSE (or Level 2 equivalent) at grade 4/C in English and Maths.
Assessment Method
Learners have a 3-month apprenticeship assessment period.
This will include a multiple-choice test, a practial assessment with questions, and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
Progression
Upon successful completion, learners can progress on to become a Car Mechanic, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and/or Service Technician, Automotive Engineer or other relevant supervisory roles. They could also pursue further apprenticeships.
Funding & Costs
If you’re a large company, you can fund the course using your apprenticeship levy. SMEs can access government funding to subsidise the cost by 95%, or 100% depending on the age of the apprentice. To find out more click here.

Autocare Technician Apprenticeship (Level 2)

Location of Study
Autocare Technicians work across the automotive industry, including autocare or fast fit centres, which may be part of a chain or operated by a regional or local independent group or owner.
They’ll carry out inspections of cars, car derived vans and light goods vehicles including electric or hydrogen powered vehicles for basic routine maintenance, whilst adhering to environmental and health and safety regulations and procedures.
Start dates are available throughout the year.
Skills Gained
Apprentices will learn how to carry out a range of services and repairs by inspecting, removing and replacing components on various vehicle systems using a range of specialist tools, measuring instruments and diagnostic equipment.
They’ll be responsible for contributing to the maintenance of stock levels and replenishment activities when stock deliveries are received.
