This one-year Level 4 course is designed for students who want to take their filmmaking and production skills to the next level. It offers an additional funded year of study for eligible learners and provides a practical, industry-focused alternative to longer university routes. During the course you’ll develop advanced skills and knowledge in film production through hands-on projects, professional workshops and real-world industry experiences. The course builds on established practices and approaches to film making, pushing you to work in ways that reflect industry and to a high creative and technical level. You’ll gain experience across key production areas such as camera, lighting, sound, editing and production management, while also having the opportunity to specialise in the areas that best match areas of interest, be is Cinematography, Editing, Sound Design, Production Management, Screenwriting, and more. Learning is entirely project-based and designed to reflect how the industry really works. Throughout the year, you’ll produce ambitious projects including an experimental film, a documentary and a final large-scale film production. These projects will help you refine your creative voice, develop professional working practices and build a strong portfolio that you can use to progress into employment or higher education. A strong focus is placed on employability and industry readiness. You’ll work to professional briefs and develop the skills employers and the industry need. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident working in professional production environments and ready to take the next step in your creative career.

On the course, collaborative film making is central to everything you do. Working in production teams, you will work on projects that will stretch your creative ability and challenge you to try new things in the pursuit of your personal and professional development. As well as building more advanced skills in production elements, such as Camera, Lighting, Sound, Post-Production, and Screenwriting, you will also improve your understanding of how all departments work together to develop a film from script to screen. In Term 1, the focus is on looking at different approaches to film making, including making an experimental film that will challenge the conventions of film making and allow you to express yourself in a way that is unique to you and your point of view. You will use more advanced techniques in camera, lighting, sound, and editing, to be creative and tell a story your own way โ€“ without being confined to the normal rules and of film making. You will also work on producing a Documentary, to explore the value of real-world stories and how, often, these can be more creative and compelling than anything the industry can come up with. Working as part of an industry brief, you will produce a documentary that aims to challenge viewpoints, raise questions, and explore the world around you โ€“ understanding that sometimes the best stories are the most personal ones. In Term 2, we take those newfound skill and creativity and use it to create your own feature-length film. You will develop, script, plan, shoot, and edit your own film, giving you the complete creative freedom to create something you can be truly proud of. During this project we will explore skills in Cinematography, Screenwriting, Sound Design, Post-Production, and more to bring your vision to life. All this will be supported by bespoke mentoring based on your specialism, as well as taking part in industry workshops, all to build your confidence to prepare you to confidently enter the industry.
You will learn and study through a series of lectures, workshops, and tutorials to develop your knowledge and skills in Film & TV production, alongside industry visits, guest speakers, film screenings, and networking events. As part of the course, we emulate the industry experience as close as possible. All assessments are project based and there are no formal exams as part of the course. As part of each assessment, you will – and are encouraged to – work to and present information in-line with industry standards and expectations.
