This course will introduce students to a wide range of Art and Design techniques across a variety of different mediums. Students will learn to build the skills needed to effectively develop creative ideas, research concepts and analyse their work, as well as learning to be able to adapt to an ever-changing design world. This course includes digital photography, animation, textiles fashion, printmaking, sculpture, 3D design as well as opportunities to undertake creative design work experience. Students will also get transferable skills such as collaborative working, time management and creative thinking.

Creative Industries accounted for 6.1% of the total number of jobs in the UK in 2017.

Level 2 students can choose from a wide range of subjects to specialise in for further study towards a career. It will also provide an introduction to the diversity of roles and responsibilities in the arts, design and creative industries and the personal and professional characteristics needed for a career in the creative media industry

During this course you will;

  • Develop English and Maths skills, as well as a portfolio of work, in preparation for direct progression to Level 3 study in the art and design area of your choice or apprenticeship.
  • Explore and extend this interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience. Many students will have identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to (eg fashion designer, graphic designer, product designer, architect), using this qualification as a starting point
  • Work with employers, galleries, Museums and respond to the fast-paced nature of the creative industries
  • Produce a personal portfolio of evidence via a final major project

This course has a 97%-100% achievement rate.

You will:  explore 2D and 3D visual communication and ways of working through art and design project work, improve visual research and study skills in preparation for progression to further study, develop an individual career plan towards working in the creative industries, gain confidence and teamwork skills to enhance communication and fulfil potential, create an individual portfolio of work appropriate to the area of progression, develop appropriate skills/qualifications in English and maths.
You will be assessed through working on practical assignments producing a range of products and sketch books for the main programme. One of the units will be externally assessed.
You will be required to purchase a course kit at approximately ยฃ110, a kit list will be provided, this will give you everything you need for the first term at college but you should expect to replace paints, sketchbooks and some materials as you progress on the course. ยฃ90 is payable on enrolment as a contribution towards the cost of study trips and additional specialist materials. Students at HRC who meet the eligibility criteria can apply to the Bursary Fund for support towards essential kit, visit and material costs. A minimum of 15 points from top 5 GCSE grades, to include English (either Language or Literature) at grade 3 or above.  Applicants are asked to provide examples of art and design work at interview.
Free to Home students under 19 on 31st August 2024. If you are a Home student aged 19 or over on the 31st August 2024, you may be liable to pay approximately ยฃ2,500 tuition fee for a Level 2 qualification and approximately ยฃ5,500 for a Level 3 qualification (these were the tuition fees for 2023/2024 and could be subject to change for 2024/2025).If you are aged 19-23 you may also be entitled to free tuition if the course you choose is on a government-approved list and the qualification is your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.If you are aged over 24 and you have not achieved a full Level 3 qualification you may be entitled to free tuition if the qualification is listed on the Government Free courses for jobs list. Similarly, if you already hold a Level 3 qualification (or above) and meet the Adult Education Budgets definition of unemployed or are in receipt of low wage, you may also be entitled to free tuition.You may also be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable.
Specialist group and individual learning support with an emphasis on diversity and different ways of learning.  Development of study skills and core skills in maths and English.  Enrichment programme of visits including London art galleries, local Museum and major exhibitions of art and design work to broaden knowledge of creative practise.  Employer engagement including; live briefs, working with local museums, theatres and resident artists and a programme of visiting speakers, including student alumni and practitioners, from the creative sector.  Encourage learners to gain confidence in realising their potential in their chosen field and contribute to professional exhibitions, competitions and showcases.
Supports progression to a specialised Level 3 vocational art and design course or an apprenticeship.
