This course will ensure you develop the theoretical and practical skills to progress on to a Level 2 Computing programme, another Level 2 programme or to employment. You will use Microsoft applications such as Powerpoint, Word and Excel as well as developing a web page, graphics and animation skills. You will also develop fundamental life skills, for example being organised, working with others, personal development planning and a requirement to improve your English and maths.

What can I do next?

If you achieve at least a Merit and have progressed in both Functional Skills/GCSE, you will be able to progress on to a Level 2 programme. Most learners move on to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT. You could also choose to go into employment or find an apprenticeship.

What will I be doing?

The course gives you the opportunity to achieve three different qualifications: Introductory Diploma in IT, Functional Skills in English and/or maths (GCSE retake for those with an equivalent of a Grade 3/Level 1).Diploma in IT:

Developing digital information
Using digital communication technologies
Creating a spreadsheet to solve problems
Creating a website
Creating a digital animated graphic

Plus:

Being Organised
Developing a Personal Progression Plan
Working with others
Researching a topic
Functional Skills: English and/or maths. Opportunities to retake GCSE English/maths where appropriate
Work Experience: Minimum of 30 hours
Independent Study: Up to 72 hours of online learning to develop a portfolio of skills

Added Extras

There will be group and personal tutorials where you will build personal, social and employability skills. You may have the opportunity to go on trips to visit IT working environments.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous throughout the course. Methods of assessment vary depending on the unit. Functional skills/GCSEs will be assessed by coursework and external assessment.

Entry Requirements

You will need to be well motivated and enthusiastic and show a keen interest in computers. You will need to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills to at least Entry Level 3 or equivalent in maths and English. What do I need to bring?

Fee information

Free to Home students under 19 on 31 August 2025. If you are a Home student aged 19 or over on 31 August 2025, you may be liable to pay approximately £2500 tuition fee for a Level 2 qualification and approximately £5000 for a Level 3 qualification (these were the tuition fees for 2024/2025 and could be subject to change for 2025/2026). If you are aged 19-23 you may also be entitled to free tuition if the course you choose is on a government-approved list and the qualification is your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. If you are aged over 24 and you have not achieved a full Level 3 qualification you may be entitled to free tuition if the qualification is listed on the Government Free courses for jobs list. Similarly, if you already hold a Level 3 qualification (or above) and meet the Adult Education Budgets definition of unemployed or are in receipt of low wage, you may also be entitled to free tuition. You may also be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable.
