This dynamic course is equivalent to the first two years of a university degree and is designed for anyone aspiring to work in the multi-billion-pound games industry. Our comprehensive curriculum covers many aspects of game design and development, you’ll delve into 3D modelling, animation, character design, concept art, level design, programming and more. You will gain the technical skills, creative insights, and industry knowledge needed to thrive in this fast-paced industry. Whether you dream of working with top gaming studios or starting your own indie game company, this course provides the perfect foundation.

This course is delivered at our state-of-the-art Ware Campus, where you will have access to high-end gaming suites equipped with the latest technology to support your learning and creativity. We teach industry-standard software, including Unity for game development, Autodesk Maya for 3D modelling and animation, and Adobe Creative Cloud for a range of creative tasks like concept art and asset creation.

We emphasize strong 1-to-1 teaching, ensuring that you receive the individual attention and support needed to excel in your studies and projects.

Most students choose to progress onto our BA (Hons) Games Design and Development (Top up) programme, which is a one-year course run in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire. This allows you to top-up your HND qualification to a full BA (Hons). Other options include:
  • Apply for a third year of study at another institution to top-up your HND qualification to a full degree.
  • Launch a career in various roles such as 3D Modelling Artist, Games Designer, Game Programmer, Level Designer, or QA Tester.
  • Develop your own games and potentially start your own game development studio.
  • Engage in freelance opportunities within the gaming industry.
Level 4 (Year 1)Module A: Process & Practice
  • Concept & Development (85 credits)Learn the fundamentals of game design and development, including the history, theories and advancements. Develop technical skills in workshops and learn to effectively communicate your ideas using various techniques, media, and formats tailored for diverse audiences.
  • Creative Project (35 credits)Engage in a hands-on project that challenges you to design and develop your own outcome in relation to your chosen area of focus, applying the skills and knowledge acquired in the practical workshops. You will adopt professional behaviours and present your development process and project results to a specified audience.
Level 5 (Year 2)Module B: Professional Creative Practice
  • Personal Professional Development (45 credits)Develop a deep understanding of the professional practices and standards in the gaming industry, focusing on enhancing personal progression and advancing your understanding of industry expectations.
  • Professional Project (75 credits)Undertake a comprehensive project appropriate to real-world game development scenarios. You will employ technical skills to produce professional results, demonstrating professional behaviours and project management abilities. You will present your professional project demonstrating strong communication skills.
There are exciting opportunities to participate in overseas, residential, and day visits that are both relevant to game development and enriching for your personal growth. These experiences are designed to broaden your horizons, inspire creativity, and deepen your understanding of the global gaming industry. Our students have previously visited fascinating destinations such as Iceland, Budapest, and Helsinki. These trips offer unique insights into different cultural and technological landscapes, providing a broader perspective on game development practices around the world.These trips are not just about game development; they are about expanding your worldview, fostering international connections, and experiencing new cultures. By participating in these visits, you will return with fresh perspectives, enhanced creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the global context of your chosen field.These visits are not mandatory, and the costs will be additional to the course fee. Students will be given sufficient notice to budget for these events.
Assessment is based on coursework that is a combination of practical assignments, projects, and presentations. You will receive an assignment brief for each task, outlining the requirements and deadlines. Work is graded through a Pass, Merit and Distinction framework. Assessments are designed to be:

  • Fair and Transparent: Following national standards and ensuring consistent and fair grading.
  • Diverse in Format: Including individual and group projects, written reports, and practical demonstrations.
  • Industry-Relevant: Reflecting real-world scenarios to better prepare you for your future career.
48 UCAS points from an appropriate level 3 qualification (UAL/ BTEC Extended Diploma or 2 A levels) and GCSE minimum grade C in English and Maths or equivalent. Applicants who can demonstrate previous relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis. Applications to our full-time undergraduate courses can be made through UCAS. If you haven’t started a UCAS application yet, and only want to apply to Hertford Regional College, you can apply directly to us using our direct application form and we will process a UCAS application on your behalf.

ยฃ6000 per annum is the fee for HNDs at HRC in 2025/26. Full and part-time students are normally eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England.
