Our ESOL courses are here to help you feel more confident using English in everyday life, work, and study.

We offer courses at different levels, from beginner to advanced. Before you start, you’ll be invited to a short language assessment. This helps us find the right level for you, so you can get the most out of your learning.

We run weekday daytime classes (9:30am โ€“ 14:00pm) and weekday evening classes (18:00pm โ€“ 21:00pm), so you can choose a time that suits you.

Please note: You must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months to join this course.

You will build your vocabulary, confidence, and the skills you need to communicate in English for everyday life and to feel more connected to British society.

Together, we’ll work on improving your:

  • Speaking & Listening โ€“ practice conversations, role plays, and group discussions.
  • Reading and Writing โ€“ learn how to understand and write different types of texts.

Grammar and Vocabulary โ€“ develop your knowledge of sentence structure, tenses, punctuation, and useful words and phrases.

Assessment depends on the level of your class, but all students take part in regular practice activities to prepare and build confidence.

During the year, you will complete three official assessments in:

  • Speaking and Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

We work hard to prepare you for these exams and will support you every step of the way to help you succeed.

To get the most out of your ESOL course, you’ll need:

  • A pen and paper for taking notes.
  • A positive attitude and a real passion for learning English.
  • Time outside of class to do homework and practise your English.
  • Willingness to take part in group work, role plays, and discussions to improve your speaking and listening skills.

You’ll be expected to attend every week. If you can’t come, please let your tutor know. Regular attendance is importantโ€”if you miss too many sessions, you may be withdrawn from the course.

Please note that refunds cannot be given for non-attendance.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, and we welcome learners with little or no English.

However, to join the course:

  • You must have lived in the UK for at least 6 months.
  • If you have asylum status or a visa, you must provide your share code so we can verify your status.

You can apply online using the button below or visit our Information Centre at Broxbourne College to collect a paper application.

After applying, you’ll be invited to the College for:

  • An interview with an ESOL tutor to check your level of English.
  • An assessment with our Information Team, who will check your documents.

The interview and assessment may take up to two hours. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member who speaks English to support you during this process.

Course fees depend on your level:

  • Beginner level (Pre-entry) โ€“ one class per week:

ยฃ75 per term or ยฃ225 for the full year.

  • All other levels (Entry to Advanced) โ€“ two classes per week:

ยฃ150 per term or ยฃ450 for the full year.
