This course is designed to provide an opportunity for those with an interest in art, design and media to explore materials, methods and processes that support many art, design and media activities and to begin to develop related skills. Students will start to learn skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, animation, printmaking, textiles and art history. Students will also learn how to critically review their own work and other transferable skills that can be applied to their future study and career. Students will also develop visual communication skills to a sophisticated level and learn to reflect, analyse and set challenging targets for themselves in their work.

The Creative Industries contributed £101.5bn to the UK economy in 2017, accounting for 5.5% of UK Gross Value Added (GVA).

Throughout the year, you will;

  • Develop a range of study skills, including English and maths
  • Build a portfolio of work to prepare for progression to L2 study in either the art and design area of your choice, or alternative subject areas in other departments
  • Visit the Gallery and studios of an internatioinal artist
  • Travel to either London or Cambridge to view current exhibitions
  • Undertake live briefs wherever possible including creating T-shirts for our Pop Up Shop and designing posters for local events
  • Use specialist studios for Textiles, 3D Design, Printmaking and Photography
  • Put up an exhibition at the end of the year that the public will be invited to view
  • Your last project will allow you to develop your work, around a theme, in a specialism of your choice

You will: explore 2D and 3D visual communication and ways of working through art and design project work, improve visual research and study skills in preparation for progression to further study, develop an individual career plan towards working in the creative industries, gain confidence and teamwork skills to enhance communication and fulfil potential, create an individualised portfolio of work appropriate to the area of progression, develop appropriate skills/qualifications in English and Maths.
You will be assessed through working on practical assignments, producing a range of products and sketchbooks. Functional skills are assessed through portfolio and one of the units will be externally assessed.
You will be required to purchase a course kit at approximately £110, a kit list will be provided, this will give you everything you need for the first term at college but you should expect to replace paints, sketchbooks and some materials as you progress on the course. £90 is payable on enrolment as a contribution towards the cost of study trips and additional specialist materials.Students at HRC who meet the eligibility criteria can apply to the Bursary Fund for support towards essential kit, visit and material costs. English Functional Skills at Level 1 or Entry Level 3.  You will be required to provide examples of art and design work at interview.
Free to Home students under 19 on 31st August 2024. If you are a Home student aged 19 or over on the 31st August 2024, you may be liable to pay approximately £2,000 tuition fee for a Level 2 qualification and approximately £5,500 for a Level 3 qualification (these were the tuition fees for 2023/2024 and could be subject to change for 2024/2025).If you are aged 19-23 you may also be entitled to free tuition if the course you choose is on a government-approved list and the qualification is your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.If you are aged over 24 and you have not achieved a full Level 3 qualification you may be entitled to free tuition if the qualification is listed on the Government Free courses for jobs list. Similarly, if you already hold a Level 3 qualification (or above) and meet the Adult Education Budgets definition of unemployed or are in receipt of low wage, you may also be entitled to free tuition.You may also be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable.
Supports progression to Level 2 art and design course or an apprenticeship.  Specialist group and individual learning support with an emphasis on diversity and different ways of learning.  Development of study skills and core skills in Maths and English.  Enrichment programme of visits including London art galleries and major exhibitions of art and design work to broaden knowledge of creative practise.  Employer engagement including live briefs, working with local museums, theatres and resident artists and a programme of visiting speakers, including student alumni and practitioners, from the creative sector.  Encourage learners to gain confidence in realising their potential in their chosen field and contribute to professional exhibitions, competition and showcases.
Once you have successfully completed this course you will have gained a nationally recognised qualification, developed your personal skills and have opportunities to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design or Level 2 Diploma in Media.
