Our ESOL courses are designed to help people gain a better understanding of English, through speaking, reading and written forms. Students will learn how to correctly use punctuation, paragraphs, grammar, sentence structure, tenses and language features for both formal and informal reading and writing. The course will also teach students to extend their vocabulary and practise their spoken English in role playing exercises and group discussions.The Entry Level 3 ESOL Qualification is perfect for learners with a good understanding and knowledge of spoken English, reading and writing, who are looking to further develop their grammar and vocabulary and are ready to move onto more complex aspects of the English language. This course is ideal for learners who are looking to achieve a qualification that is recognised by employers or are aiming to progress onto the ESOL Level 1 Qualification or English Functional Skills before progressing onto GCSE English Language.

What will I be doing?

You will be working towards the Entry Level 3 ESOL Qualification which is recognised by employers and all educational institutes. You will have lots of opportunities to practise your spoken English and take part in role plays and group discussions. You will learn how to correctly use punctuation, paragraphs, grammar, sentence structure, tenses and language features for both formal and informal reading and writing. •Term 1 will extend your vocabulary with an assessment in speaking and listening. •Term 2 will assess your reading ability with a range of reading materials and past exam papers•Term 3 will assess your writing ability with a range of writing materials and past exam papers. .

How will I be assessed?

You will sit an exam at the end of each term and on achieving a pass you will receive a qualification for each exam. You will have 1 opportunity to re-sit your exam if you do not achieve a pass on your 1st attempt.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to have a real passion to learn English and some time to do homework and practise your English outside of the classroom. You will need to be willing to do group work and take part in role plays and group discussions to develop your speaking and listening skills. You will be expected to attend every week or notify your tutor for reason of absence, failure to do so could result in you being withdrawn and refunds cannot be issued for non-attendance. In addition to the course fees, there is a £45 book fee which will provide you with a course book and work book that will be used in the classroom and for homework. The college will provide you with worksheets and writing books, you will need to bring your own pens. You will be provided with a student email and shown how to use your emails. This course is designed to be taught in the classroom with an ESOL tutor and a group of learners (maximum class sizes of 16) however please be aware that if the Government or the Local Authority announces a lockdown due to the Coronavirus, classes will move to online learning. You will be given a student email account and access to Office 365 at the start of your course and shown how to work these, so you are ready to complete classes and learning online if needed, at any time throughout the year.

Entry Requirements

You will have a good command of spoken English and the some ability at reading and writing in English, however no previous formal qualifications are necessary as you will be assessed at interview. If you have previously achieved either ESOL Entry Level 1 or 2 please bring proof of your qualification to the interview with you. You can apply for the course online or go to our Information Centre at either Broxbourne or Ware College to collect a paper application. After applying you will be invited to the College for an interview with an ESOL tutor to check your level of English. You will also by assessed by our Information Team who will check your passport, Home Office documents, that you have been resident in the country for 3 years, evidence of employment benefits or low wage. The interview and assessment can take up to 2 hours, you can bring a friend or family member who can speak English on your behalf at the interview and assessment.

Fee information

£450 for the course (this includes all exam costs) and £45 book fee = £495 Please note, refunds cannot be issued on the grounds of personal reasons or personal change in circumstances, once the course has started. Learners that can provide evidence that they receive Universal Credit or Job Seekers Allowance or earn less than £17,374.50 per year could be eligible for fee remission. Learners that can provide Home Office evidence of asylum, refugee, humanitarian, exceptional or indefinite leave to enter or remain status (including Calais leave to remain), could also be eligible for fee remission. You will need to have been resident in the country for 3 years.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of the Entry Level 3 ESOL Qualification you can progress onto the ESOL Level 1 Qualification for Career Development and Progression or English Functional Skills (dependent on passing the Functional Skills initial assessment) before progressing onto GCSE in English Language. .
